What is Fallout 76?
Fallout 76 is the first-ever multiplayer Fallout title in the franchise. Set in Appalachia, West Virginia, the game takes place just twenty-five years after the bombs hit the country. It’s a fresh post-apocalypse, unlike previous titles such as Fallout 4, which were set some 200 years after the bombs dropped.
This time around, instead of finding your son or bringing water to the wasteland, you’re tasked with helping to rebuild some semblance of society. As part of Vault 76, you’re trained and equipped to construct C.A.M.P.s to help restore a sense of community with your fellow Vault Dwellers.
More often than not, what happens is total chaos. There are Public Events to take part in, nuclear bombs to drop, world bosses to fight, unique weapons to collect, Power Armor to don, and factions to side with in an expansive and growing story.
Welcome to Appalachia!
Fallout 76 Starter Guides
We have a growing selection of guides for the game covering basic topics alongside the more focused, comprehensive, and informative Fallout 76 guides found below in the various sections.
Joining the expansive world of Appalachia without a handful of Fallout 76 guides is quite the challenge. There are so many unique monsters, weapons, and quests to explore, that a new player may find themselves overwhelmed. Here are a few tips and tricks for Fallout 76 to help you kickstart your adventure in this wild world!
Take the game at your own pace! I cannot stress this enough, but the world of Appalachia is more for exploration and less about following the meta. There’s no point in racing through all of the content to see the end game. You’ll miss out on a lot of excellent quests, characters, and encounters!
At the same time, don’t hesitate to leave the game’s starting zone. The Forest, while relatively peaceful, with low-level enemies and points of interest, only offers so much in terms of exploration and progression. It’s okay to venture out and see the more dangerous parts of Appalachia!
Pick up everything! When I first started, knowing the weight limit cap in place, I was rather conservative about what I picked up. Don’t be like me, though. You’ll want to scoop up every bit of ammunition, chems, food, armor, and weapons that you find. You can scrap it all at C.A.M.P. to craft more valuable items.
Speaking of C.A.M.P., don’t worry about where you place your first base. You can pack it up and move to almost anywhere on the map for a handful of caps. It’s worthwhile to explore Appalachia, find the perfect view, then plop down your C.A.M.P.
Do not engage in PvP! While Fallout 76 does feature PvP gameplay, it’s jank and, unfortunately, not very fun. With so many players having spent the last few years perfecting their build and equipment, you’re seriously outmatched.
Don’t sell unique outfits and weapons! As you progress through the game’s main storyline and side quests, even some of the events, you’ll earn unique clothing, armor, and weapons not found anywhere else in the game. You might desperately require caps, but fight the urge to sell these items. You can’t find them again without starting a new character.
Take part in Public Events! I, like the anti-social loner that I am, avoided group play altogether in Fallout 76 for, oh, about a year. I would actively move away from other players and completely ignore the game’s Public Events. Don’t! These prove genuinely fun and lucrative if you want to level up quickly and earn better gear!
Learn how to cook! You’ll find cooking recipes scattered throughout the game and earn some as quest rewards, so learning to cook is relatively simple. The food you find in the game can satiate your hunger for a short while, but cooking satisfies more and occasionally offers unique boons with each dish.
It’s okay to die! Yes, this is a harsh world full of survival mechanics and loot to collect. Unfortunately, you will die. Either to another player, an overpowered enemy, or during a Public Event; it happens, and it’s okay. Dying in Fallout 76 isn’t the end of the world, as you can walk back and scoop up your dropped junk items.
Find a farming spot for loot and XP! Everyone has a favorite farming spot for loot and XP, so do your best to find one. You can slay Ghouls in The Burrows or The Whitespring Golf Club, or take it up a notch and tackle Super Mutants at West-Tek. No matter where you choose, having that one reliable spot can help you level and stock up.
