Fallout 76: How to Claim a Workshop

Do you really have a reason to claim a workshop in Fallout 76? Yeah, actually. But how do you claim a workshop for yourself to earn some sweet loot? We briefly touched on the topic elsewhere but let’s dive in a little more so that new and returning players to Bethesda’s MMO have a fighting chance!

What Are Workshops?

First, for the uninitiated, let’s go over what precisely is a workshop in Fallout 76. A workshop, technically speaking, is part of the overall building system within the post-apocalyptic MMO. These are public construction zones, with similar building mechanics to the C.A.M.P., that require a quest to activate and control — the ‘Claim Workshop Event‘ quest.

Once you complete the quest and gain control over the workshop area, you may build up resource-producing equipment that provides the player with raw crafting materials. If you’re big on crafting your own weapons or armor, you want to spend time in or around public workshops.

How to Claim a Workshop

So, you’ve stumbled upon a vacant workshop, let’s say the one at the Tyler County Dirt Track, and you have visions of grandeur. You want to claim the workshop as your own, reap the benefits, and ward off Scorched and upset players.

You’re in luck, because claiming a workshop is easier than you think. As we previously mentioned, you’ll receive the Claim Workshop Event once you come close to a workshop in the world. Once you clear our the enemies — usually Scorched — you can activate the red workshop near the main building, just down from the bleachers, and begin building.

Using the Tyler County Dirt Track as our example once more, you’ll note a number of resource deposits to the east and west of the track. You can construct and/or activate excavators to pull resources from the ground, collect them, and use them to craft.

Occasionally, you will need to defend your workshop. You’ll be attacked by passing players who want your resources and Scorched who simply hate your guts. It’s easy enough to defend against the latter.

Lock Your Excavators

Chances are you can’t sit around all day and night protecting your workshop once you have a claim on the area. You have quests to complete.

If you’re a nice guy and want to share your loot with other players, you can leave your setup as is and not lock everything.

Or, you can choose to protect your resources and lock your excavators. How? By opening up the build menu, hover over your excavator, and choosing the ‘lock’ option using the ‘F’ key. When you lock an excavator, you can choose a lock strength of between Level 0 and Level 3, with a higher lock level requiring more resources in exchange. A Level 3 lock, however, requires a player with all three lockpicking perk cards in effect.

You’re basically set.

Do you know what will help you claim and hold a workshop? If you level up fast in Fallout 76, no one can challenge you outright!
