Fallout 76: How to Get a Backpack

When it comes to inventory management, Fallout 76 proves hardcore to the max. You’ll find yourself constantly struggling with carry weight concerns, dumping loads of unwanted ammo and scrap so that you can fast-travel out of harm’s way. But do you know what would help? If you learn how to get a backpack in Fallout 76! Seriously, it helps!

How to Get a Backpack

In your early game days of Fallout 76, you’ll struggle with all of the items you loot. It’s a total pain in the ass. But a backpack can be yours relatively early on in the experience.

You have a few options: Standard Backpacks and Small Backpacks.

To unlock the Standard Backpack, which you do want, you’ll need to reach Possum rank in the Pioneer Scouts.

For a Small Backpack, simply follow the main questline for the Overseer to the Morgantown Airport Terminal. Here, you’ll find a room with a single NPC, a few crafting tables, and a chest containing various loot and the plans to craft a Small Backpack.

It’ll do for now.

How to Unlock the Standard Backpack in Fallout 76

While the Small Backpack in Fallout 76 proves capable at first, you’ll quickly want more storage space for your character. For that, the Standard Backpack reigns supreme.

But how do you unlock the Standard Backpack?

You must follow the ‘Order of the Tadpole’ quest, which you may start by inspecting carefully placed Pioneer Scouts posters at any train station in Appalachia.

In the questline, you’ll have to demonstrate four key abilities: Kindness, Bravery, Helpfulness, and Growth. Each task requires a bit of a time sink, though.

Once finished, you’ll attain the rank of Possum, and receive the Standard Backpack as a quest reward. It offers +10 Carry Weight, but once leveled to 50, it’ll offer you +60 Carry Weight.

Once you have unlocked the backpack itself, you can buy the crafting plans, including modifications, from the Possum Vending Machine at Camp Lewis or Camp Adams.

Alternatively, if you don’t feel like spending time on a side quest, head on over to the Morgantown Airport Terminal for the Overseer. On the top floor, you’ll easily discover the Overseer’s Cache. Inside is a bag identical in appearance to the Standard Backpack but it only offers half the carry weight. At level 50, you’ll receive +30 Carry Weight.

Backpack Skins

You can unlock various backpack skins in Fallout 76 via the Atom Store. Of course, these cost money, but they’re a great way to mix up the aesthetic of your character and gear.
