State of Decay 2: Which Map Should You Play First

Whether you’re brand-new to the game or a returning player, chances are you’re torn on which map to play. Which State of Decay 2 map is the best?

You have numerous options, and each one offers advantages and disadvantages to consider before forming a new community. Do you start on the newly-introduced Trumbull Valley? Or do you kick it old-school on Cascade Hills?

Providence Ridge

Providence Ridge

With the release of Providence Ridge, developer Undead Labs seemingly learned a lot about enhanced base design.

Providence Ridge features expansive forests, an abandoned logging town, and residential neighborhoods dotted with loot and zombies.

But it’s the bases that keep players returning for more. With the likes of Rusty Rosie’s for the early game and Lundegaard Lumber Mill for the end game, players have worthwhile options for long-term bases and communities.

Trumbull Valley

Trying to decide which State of Decay 2 map is the best without mentioning the new iteration of Trumbull Valley feels wrong.

With the release of Homecoming, Undead Labs reintroduced the iconic map from the first game and the Heartland expansion, but with a few additions and enhancements.

No longer is the Blood Plague running rampant. This time around, in campaign mode, you’ll find tidbits of lore about past survivors, the plague itself, and the military’s response to the pandemic.

But the multitude of exceptional bases draws me in for a new playthrough almost weekly. Trumbull Valley features some of my favorite base designs, including the Farmland Compound located in the center of the map.

Drucker County

I know a few long-time players will scoff at the idea of Drucker County as one of the best maps in State of Decay 2, but I would disagree wholeheartedly.

Once you look past its drab color scheme, you begin to notice its intricacies. The layout, base designs, excellent loot farming possibilities, and you’ll find a map that withstood the test of time.

Speaking of bases, is there anything better than the Barricaded Strip Mall?

If you’re new to State of Decay 2, I highly recommend starting your first community in Drucker County. It’s a fantastic map to learn the ins and outs of the game, plus farm high-tier loot.
