Games Like State of Decay to Hold You Over

If you’re at all like me and the hordes of cult-like fans State of Decay has accumulated over the years, you eagerly want more. More of the same; new features; new community members! What you need while we wait for State of Decay 3 are games like State of Decay to hold you over, right?

Well, look no further. I’ve accumulated a list of similar, albeit different in their own way, games like our beloved State of Decay!

Days Gone

While more story-oriented than State of Decay 2, Days Gone features looting, crafting, and hordes of undead that boggle the mind!

Following the misfortunes of Deacon St. John, Days Gone places players in a hellish landscape of post-apocalyptic Oregon, with a buddy, a bike, and plenty of weaponry—both makeshift and scavenged.

Unlike State of Decay, you won’t build up a community per se. When you rescue survivors in the game world, you can choose to send them to other enclaves. You’re a nomad on a mission. And in that mission, you’ll fight monstrous hordes of freakers, reminiscent of our days scavenging Downtown Marshall.

7 Days to Die

By now, most everyone has heard of 7 Days to Die. It’s a Steam Early Access success story, despite having not yet left the program.

In 7 Days, you will loot entire towns of useful resources, craft weapons, complete quests for traders and enclaves, and build up a base/community of your very own. Unlike in State of Decay, however, every seven days, waves of zombies and freaks will assault your structure until morning.

Thankfully, with robust multiplayer support and server controls, you can recreate a thriving post-apocalypse community with your buddies online by altering the wave spawns and focusing on building, looting, and surviving.

The Day Before

The Day Before isn’t out just yet but it promises to impress with a mixture of DayZ and The Division set in an abandoned, post-apocalyptic city reminiscent of New York City.

Well, it’s not totally abandoned. Other players, scavengers like yourself, vie for useful resources and loot to trade, craft, and fight. And of course, countless undead creep about in the dark of almost every structure in the game.

It appears part MMO, part survival horror; with the promise of a large world to explore, a little bit of base building, and plenty of vehicles, weapons, and a lot of loot to find.

Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid City

If you can look past the art style, Project Zomboid offers one of the most robust zombie survival scenarios in gaming.

It’s not a matter of how will you survive, but a matter of how will you die? You see, everyone dies in Project Zomboid. It’s a tough game that, with time and experience, offers a memorable experience as you build up your safe house, loot entire towns, and skirt hordes of undead roaming the main street.

Developer The Indie Stone recently released full multiplayer support for the game, allowing you and a bunch of friends to form a The Walking Dead-style community. And soon enough, NPCs and animals will enter the picture for an even more all-encompassing survival story.

There you have it, a handful of games like State of Decay to keep you busy until the State of Decay 3 release date!
