What’s Next for State of Decay 2?

By now, those of us thoroughly hooked on the gameplay loop in State of Decay 2 continue to bide our time until the release of State of Decay 3. Whenever that should happen. But what’s next for State of Decay 2? Where will the open-world zombie game go from here?

A Look Back

In the past year alone, State of Decay 2 has grown by leaps and bounds. We’ve witnessed the release of the Trumbull Valley map for Campaign Mode, Update 28 with its enclave and outpost enhancements, a number of unique and fun bounties to collect, and so much more.

We saw improvements to recruiting new survivors, how the Bounty Broker schedule works, the introduction of Plague Territories, and new lore pieces to discover throughout the game.

It’s a whole lot to take in, especially for a new player.

What’s Next?

In recent gameplay streams, developer Undead Labs have hinted at a few upcoming changes to the game. For starters, we may see a rework of the Legacy system, in which players can transfer surviving members of communities over to a new game, complete with their skills and inventory intact.

After that, it’s unclear where the game may go next. We’re certainly coming to the end of its development cycle, after many years of active updates and changes, plus a growing community to boot!

Where is State of Decay 3?

As of right now, all we have to go on for State of Decay 3 is the teaser trailer released in 2020. Many of us, myself included, have extensive wishlists for the third game, including improved base building and relationship mechanics for our survivors.

But will we see State of Decay 3 in 2022? It’s unlikely, unfortunately. Past rumors have indicated the game is still in extremely early development stages. It could be, and this is pure speculation, another year or two before we can enjoy the third game.
