Will We Ever See Days Gone 2?

When it first launched, Days Gone received lukewarm responses from critics and many fans alike. Why? Because of a multitude of bugs on day one and a slow-to-start story that many, sadly, couldn’t invest into. But these days, many years after its initial launch on PlayStation 4, everyone is curious about whether or not we’ll see Days Gone 2. The first, and currently only, game has become a cult classic. Seriously, fans rave about the gameplay and story nowadays, and they’re not wrong. It’s exceptional!

Critical Reception

First and foremost, let’s turn the clocks back to April of 2019, when Days Gone first launched on PlayStation consoles. At the time, it received mixed or average reviews from critics, though the PC version, which launched much later, currently has ‘Very Positive’ reviews, holding steady at around 92% positive amongst fans.

Why did critics fail to see the potential of Days Gone at first glance?

For the most part, critics were tough on the game’s open world and overall design. They cited a significant lack of content available, with most side quests feeling like meaningless filler to bloat the game’s completion time.

Some felt the game was too repetitive — “ride here, shoot enemies, ride back, etc.”

Most everyone agreed, however, that tackling the game’s extensive hordes proved a high point for Days Gone.

Sales Numbers

According to Jeff Ross, game director, Days Gone sold over 8 million copies by the end of 2020. That number includes both the original PlayStation 4 release and the later PC release.

Many gaming outlets disputed the sales numbers, however. Personally, I feel like the game director would know better than journalists how many copies his game sold. But that’s just my opinion.

Days Gone 2 — The Sequel Fans Want!

According to Jason Schreier, Bend Studio pitched a Days Gone 2, but Sony ultimately rejected the idea due to the game’s initial reception. The primary idea behind the sequel was a “shared universe with co-op play,” which sounds fantastic.

Sadly, Sony doesn’t want to bankroll a second game and face the same criticism the original launch received. More than likely, the sequel would receive far better reviews from both fans and critics alike, though that’s just speculation.

Film Adaptation

Lastly, there are rumors that a film adaptation of Days Gone is in the works with PlayStation Productions and Vendetta Productions. If a movie does come to theaters, and it does well, we may see the world revived for a sequel.

For whatever reason, they’re not considering Sam Witwer to play Deacon St. John in the film, even though he portrays the character in the game. Instead, Sam Heughan is in consideration for the leading role.

What?

That makes zero sense to me!

Unfortunately, as of right now, there are no plans for Days Gone 2. Maybe in the future Sony will wake up and see how well-received the game is among fans and totally ignore critics altogether!
