Where Do Super Mutants Come From?

Fallout 4: Where Do Super Mutants Come From?

In the world of Fallout, one of the most common foes you’ll face is the Super Mutant. These tough-as-nails superhumans are found in each game in the series thus far and stem from the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) in the game’s lore.

But as well know, each game contains its own canon of sorts, and Fallout 4 is no different. So, where do Super Mutants come from in Fallout 4?

Super Mutants in Fallout 4

While most of the world’s Super Mutants can easily be written off as failed experiments, the creatures in Fallout 4 vary slightly.

You see, the big bad guy of Fallout 4, the Institute, opted to experiment with FEV to create their own intricate brand of mutated creatures. These muscular, violent atrocities are immune to both radiation and disease, and they’re tough to take down with conventional means, too.

Like with the Institute themselves, you’ll find most of these unleashed experiments throughout downtown Boston, specifically in Fallon’s Department Store, Fort Strong, Trinity Tower, Big John’s Salvage, and The Gwinnett Restaurant.

Identifying Super Mutant Camps

If you’re new to the world of Fallout, you’ll likely put two and two together when you stumble upon your first mutant camp.

They enjoy hanging meat bags, placing twisted hunks of metal in the ground, and keeping cages of prisoners and human remains on standby.

Overall, it’s a lot of gore and mayhem.

Types of Super Mutants in Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is a massive, open-world game with a lot of tough enemies to face. Super Mutants are no different, and they come in a variety of styles and flavors to fight.

  • Super Mutant
  • Super Mutant Suicider
  • Super Mutant Skirmisher
  • Super Mutant Brute
  • Super Mutant Butcher
  • Super Mutant Master
  • Super Mutant Overlord
  • Super Mutant Primus
  • Super Mutant Warlord
  • Super Mutant Behemoth
  • Epic Behemoths
  • Ancient Behemoths

As the name would suggest, the Super Mutant Behemoth is the grandest and strongest of all mutations in the wasteland. These monsters tower over everyone and everything at a staggering 13 feet tall. They are the oldest, strongest, and most menacing of all FEV experiments.

That being said, they’re not overly bright. They rely on brute strength and ferocity above all else.

Holding On to Humanity

Throughout your playthroughs of Fallout, you’ll stumble upon unique Super Mutants holding on to humanity. In Fallout 4, you’ll meet, for example, Dr. Brian Virgil.

Mutants like Virgil can still speak coherently, and they don’t attack humans or the player on sight. In some cases, like with Virgil, you can even accept quests from them.
