Sea of Thieves: Is It Crossplay? – Answered

You likely have a gaming preference, as does your best friend and your grandpa. They play on PC or Xbox, and those two systems aren’t always compatible despite Microsoft doing its damnedest. But what about the pirate action adventure that took the world by storm in 2018? Is Sea of Thieves crossplay?

Does Sea of Thieves Support Crossplay?

Yes! Sea of Thieves does offer full crossplay support between PC and Xbox, though the game isn’t available on PlayStation due to Microsoft publishing the title. As such, if you play on PC and your pals play on Xbox, all it takes to link up is to sign in via the Xbox App and then add everyone to the same party. It’s simple!

And yeah, crossplay in Sea of Thieves even works if you bought the game over on Steam and want to play with someone who bought the game on the Xbox or Microsoft Store. My wife and I always play this way, with my copy on Steam and her copy on the Microsoft Store. It works just fine!

How to Play Sea of Thieves Crossplay With Friends

If you intend to play with another player via crossplay, you must first add them as friends using the in-game menu. It’s directly connected to the Xbox App. I’ve found that inviting someone directly from the Steam Friends List doesn’t work as intended in this case, so it’s best to use the Xbox App.

On PC:

  • Open the Xbox App via Windows, then navigate to the ‘Social‘ tab.
  • Select ‘Search for People‘ and enter your friend’s username.
  • Click on their username, then hit ‘Add Friend.’
  • You can invite them to your crew in Sea of Thieves from there.

On Xbox:

  • Press the ‘Xbox‘ button on the center of the controller, then navigate to the social tab.
  • Choose ‘Find Someone‘ and enter their username.
  • Add them as friends, and then invite them to your crew in Sea of Thieves.
