Project Zomboid: How to Pick Starting Towns

One of your first major choices in Project Zomboid is to pick a starting location. You have a few options. When it comes to time to pick one of the towns in Project Zomboid, do you opt for Riverside? West Point? What about Rosewood?

Your starting location in Project Zomboid can greatly affect your survival chances. Some starts, like Riverside, are a tad bit easier on new players. Others, however, have easy access to Louisville, or better loot, or more zombies to clear out if that’s your thing!

Towns in Project Zomboid

In total, there are four starting towns in Project Zomboid: Riverside, Muldraugh, Rosewood, and West Point. Each has a unique layout, loot locations, and easier or more difficult starting conditions for players to test out. But know this: all maps are connected. Just because you spawn in West Point does not mean you cannot travel to Riverside. It just takes time.

Riverside

Riverside, one of the four starting locations, features the extensive river to the north, with commercial districts spanning most of the riverside. In fact, most of Riverside is commercial in nature. You have a few housing developments to the east and south, along with a scattering of residential throughout, but this is a good map if you want to locate stockpiles of supplies for a growing base.

A few notable landmarks include the Knox Heights Country Club, Enigma Books, Pharmahug, Fossoil, and the local Police Station for gear and weaponry.

Muldraugh

Muldraugh, a small starting town in Kentucky, is easily considered the primary location for much of the game. In fact, it is the starting point for multiple scenarios, and the upcoming story mode, too. Overall, Muldraugh, despite its size, is a low-income town, with a few abandoned shops up for sale or lease. It’s somewhat barren but an easy start.

A few notable landmarks in Muldraugh include Pizza Whirled, The Rusty Rifle, and Sunstar Motel.

Rosewood

Rosewood is one of the smaller locations available as a starting point. The town features a few blocks of residential developments, a couple of commercial entities, including fast food, a medical center, and gas station, and an extensive drive-in. Overall, Rosewood is a fine starting point, if your plan is to move along quickly. Alternatively, the local prison can help you relive those The Walking Dead memories!

The notable landmarks in Rosewood include Rosewood Medical, Rosewood Drive-In, Knox Penitentiary, and Mama McFudgington’s.

West Point
