Project Zomboid: How to Collect Water

Water is key to your survival in Project Zomboid. Like food, you can collect water in Project Zomboid to help stave off dehydration, though you’re on a time limit. Before you know it, water and power will both shut off in Knox County. By then, you should have a stockpile and a few sources for yourself, too.

Before the Water Shuts Off

Before the water supply shuts off entirely, you’ll find water relatively easily. It’s in almost every house and building in the game via showers, toilets, kitchen sinks, and bathroom sinks.

Yes, you can drink out of the toilet. If you want to get sick, dip a hand in the bowl. Otherwise, boil the water before consuming.

While you still have time, assuming you have chosen an adequate base to survive, start filling every available container you have with water from the faucet. If you can find water bottles, even better!

After the Water in Project Zomboid Shuts Off

It’s unclear when the water actually shuts off in Project Zomboid, though it definitely does happen. So be prepared!

But hey, it’s still entirely possible to collect water in Project Zomboid even if the taps don’t work and the shower is dry.

  • Utilizing the carpentry skill, you can craft rain barrels using four planks, four garbage bags, and four nails. However, the water you accumulate is tainted at first glance. You’ll need to treat it or boil it to enjoy consumable water.
  • You’ll find wells outside of towns that all offer a clean source of water.
  • You can still loot water bottles, soda cans, and other sources of liquid to keep yourself going.

Lastly, there’s always the river. But once again, the water is contaminated. You’ll want to boil or treat the water before drinking.
