Fallout 4: How to Claim Settlements

A big part of the gameplay within Fallout 4 revolves around claiming and building up settlements to help weary wastelanders recuperate and regain their lives. But how do you claim Fallout 4 settlements?

If you’re new to the game, as many are, or perhaps you skipped an integral part of the main story early on, chances are you don’t know how to claim a settlement. And hey, that’s okay!

How Many Fallout 4 Settlements Are There?

In total, in the vanilla game, you can gain access to 29 settlements.

So, how do you unlock said settlements? You can either wait for your chosen faction to send you on a quest there or you can visit on your own to help the current inhabitants in some way.

Either way, it is entirely possible to unlock and build up every settlement in a single playthrough.

How to Claim Fallout 4 Settlements

To claim a settlement, you first need to reveal said settlement on the map. You can do so by either visiting the colony yourself while wandering the map, or you can wait for a faction to give you a quest. Most will find settlements via Preston Garvey, who directs The Minutemen from afar.

Once you arrive at the settlement, you’ll need to complete a quest for the current inhabitants or clear out any hostiles.

Most quests are relatively straightforward. Go to point A, kill x number of enemies, return to the quest giver for a bit of dialogue and a small reward. Said reward will include the use of the red workbench located in the settlement, which is where you can build from.

If the settlement is controlled by hostiles, kill every single enemy in the immediate area. Then, find the workbench. Simple!
