RimWorld: How to Avoid a Roof Collapse

In the vast expanse of the rim, the death of a pawn is but a blip on the radar. RimWorld is an unforgiving game, and if you’re playing on commitment mode, it’s even worse as you cannot load a previous save. So, when your mineshaft or underground dining room collapses, killing the pawn faithfully chipping away at the walls can come as quite the blow. I know firsthand; I lost a pawn this way just last night. An untimely death caused by four pillars of stone collapsing to the ground — the only thing left was a medical kit, ironically enough. You need to know how to avoid a roof collapse in RimWorld.

This scenario plagues many RimWorld players. But learning how to prevent roof collapse in RimWorld can save virtual lives once and for all!

The Curse of the Overhead Mountain

The reason your latest RimWorld game failed because of an untimely death is that you dug through an overhead mountain without the proper support. Does that sound about right? It happens often!

In RimWorld, a roof must connect to a wall or door within six tiles. For instance, if you’re mining out a chunk of rock in the middle of a field, build up the occasional piece of steel wall as a support beam.

It’s recommended that when building a base in RimWorld, you take your time during the planning phase. Utilize the planning tool, count out your tiles, and complete the ideal layout before starting the dig.

Here’s How to Avoid a Roof Collapse in RimWorld

Well, it’s tough because RimWorld doesn’t blatantly and clearly offer such information. At least, not at first glance. If you hover over a tile, look in the bottom left of your screen. A little information pop-up will appear with a few notes on the specific tile you’re hovering over. Here, you’ll note whether a roof is in place.

To put things plainly, to avoid a roof collapse, you need support. Do not build a room bigger than 12×12 underground or below a thin rock roof. You’ll lose colonists underneath the rubble.

Personally, I like to take the Dwarven route. I build interconnected hallways with adjoining rooms on either side; that way I have walls at regular intervals.

Using Mods to Stop a Roof Collapse in RimWorld

If you spend any time on the RimWorld Workshop, you’ll note several mods offering support beams. But the game has its own. Put up a single piece of wall — it’s that simple!

With a little knowledge, forethought, and the proper support, it’s entirely possible to avoid a roof collapse in RimWorld and keep your pawns alive one more day!
