The Rust release is coming up on its tenth anniversary in the gaming space, and it remains one of the most popular and yet divisive survival games on the market. Despite the open hostility within the community, who often resort to trolling and griefing, the game remains ever-popular. For good reason, too. It’s an addicting gameplay loop of farming, crafting, base building, and raiding. So, how long has Rust been out!

When Did Rust Release On PC?

Way back in the day, when Steam Early Access was at it most popular, games like Project Zomboid and 7 Days to Die proved that the program could be successful despite long development times. But one often overlooked game from those days is Rust.

Rust first released on PC on December 11, 2013. The survival multiplayer game fully released to the world in February 2018.

Since then, developer Facepunch Studios continues to release major content updates, bug fixes, and changes, along with a broad selection of item skins. Most recently, the studio put out building skins, allowing long-time base-building fans a chance at creating more aesthetic structures with Adobe or Brick Rust building skins!

For the longest time, the survival gaming genre remained a PC staple. But with the advancements made to console technology, those long-standing PC games came to home consoles for the first time.

Rust released on consoles on May 21, 2021, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Personally, you won’t find me on consoles playing Rust. It’s the type of game where every second and action makes a difference, so aiming for the head for a snap shot, which is easier done with a mouse and keyboard, requires the power of a PC.
