Fallout 4: Do Companions Need Ammo? – Answered

There’s nothing wrong with traveling through the wasteland alongside a buddy. And seeing as Bethesda isn’t too keen on providing us with a truly cooperative experience, the various companions in Fallout 4 will have to suffice. But do companions need ammo in Fallout 4? Let’s find out!

Do Followers Use Ammo in Fallout 4?

Yes and no. Followers require ammunition in Fallout 4 to use their weaponry, but once you give them any for their default weapon, it’s an infinite pool. But if you switch their default weapon from a pipe pistol to a shotgun, for example, you must provide them with shells. They will run through ammunition in such cases.

Furthermore, if your companion does not have ammunition, they will pick up a weapon from the ground, along with the necessary ammo, and continue to fight by your side.

That said, if you run a melee build and want your companion to use the same, no one has to worry about ammunition whatsoever. A machete doesn’t use bullets, after all!

Do You Need to Give Companions Ammo?

If you intend to leave a companion with their stock weapon, like Piper’s pipe weapon, you do not need to give them any ammo. They come pre-equipped with ammunition for their equipped weaponry, and it won’t run out.

That said, if you intend to change up their loadout to a weapon with a different caliber, then yes, you need to provide them with additional ammo that matches the firearm. Without said ammo, they will revert to their stock weapon, or no weapon at all, and prove ineffective in combat.

That’s a bummer, right? You’re losing ammo in the short term but gaining a fighting companion, so it does even out.
