Red Dead Online: How to Start a New Character

So, you want to start a new character in Red Dead Online? Unlike in Grand Theft Auto Online, which allows for multiple characters, Red Dead Online only allows a single character per player.

But hey, every now and again, we feel as if we’ve made a mistake in the character creator, or perhaps you put the game down for many months and are only now returning to the fold. In such cases, making a new character in Red Dead Online makes total sense. But how?

Starting a New Character in Red Dead Online

You’ve made up your mind, you want to start from scratch.

To create a new character in Red Dead Online, visit the pause menu and select the ‘Player’ option. Once you’ve opened up the player menu, hold down the indicated button — X/Square — to delete your current character.

Like most games, Red Dead Online will ask if you’re positive you want to start a fresh character. If you hit yes, you’ll return to the main menu where you may now start the multiplayer mode over.

What About My Money and Gold?

You’re rightly worried about any money or gold you’ve accumulated but fret not.

When you start a brand-new character, both your money and gold will carry over to the new character.

That being said, all other items, including weapons and clothing, along with unlocks and progress, will not carry over to your new outlaw.

How Do I Change My Appearance in Red Dead Online?

If your end goal is to simply change your appearance, you don’t need to start a new character in Red Dead Online. Instead, you can choose the ‘Change Appearance’ option from the Online Options menu.

At launch, Rockstar did not allow players to change their appearance. But now, years later, we have the option.

Your first time is completely free. After that, it costs 10 Gold.
